The History of Seeley Hills Trails
The Seeley Hills Trails system winds through a beautiful mix of Sawyer County Forest property and the historic Urenholdt Memorial Demonstration Forest. Many of the pathways enjoyed by visitors today originally served a very different purpose, beginning their history as early logging routes.
A Partnership for Silent Sports
In the 1990s, the Seeley Ski Club (now defunct) envisioned a dedicated space for non-motorized outdoor recreation. In a joint partnership with Sawyer County Forestry and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), they developed a formalized trail system to support:
Cross-country skiing
Mountain biking
Hiking and trail running
Snowshoeing
Hunting
Community Support & Maintenance Today
Today, the legacy of the trails is kept alive by the Seeley Hills Club, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Dedicated volunteers invest over 150 hours every year clearing, mowing, and maintaining the trails to keep them safe and accessible for all users.
This work relies heavily on strong community relationships. The trail system is maintained in continuous cooperation with the Town of Lenroot and the Seeley Lions Club, ensuring local civic support for the property and its facilities. Additionally, winter fat bike loops carving through the system are groomed and maintained through a partnership with CAMBA (Cable Area Mountain Bike Association), ensuring year-round access for outdoor enthusiasts.
