Urenholdt Memorial Forest
The Uhrenholdt Memorial Demonstration Forest is a 119-acre public forest management area located in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, off County Highway OO near Seeley.
Overview and History
Land Roots: The land was originally owned by Danish immigrants Soren and Christine Uhrenholdt. The land was part of northern Wisconsin's "Cutover Region." Their family donated the property to the State of Wisconsin to honor family members, including their grandson Ensign Andrew Curtis Uhrenholdt, who died on the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Designation: Established in 1947 and listed under Wisconsin Demonstration Forests Locations, it serves as a Uhrenholdt Memorial State Forest demonstration area.
Ecosystem: It features red and white pine, aspen, tamarack, balsam fir, and black spruce. Fourteen acres are kept completely pristine and undisturbed, while the rest demonstrate sustainable forestry practices.
Trails and Recreation
Activities: The area offers self-guided walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking.
Connections: The trails tie directly into the Seeley Hills Trails.
Maintenance: Trails are maintained locally by the Seeley Hills Club and CAMBA for winter fat biking.
